Grow your practice with clarity and confidence in the year ahead.
Time to read: 1.5 minutes
At the beginning of a new year, recognizing unsatisfactory elements of performance is both difficult and uncomfortable.
When you try your hardest to improve your client relationships and grow your practice, you place enormous strain on your mental abilities.
Obviously, if the activities that require practice, especially for business development, were easy and fun, everyone would do them. But in reality, most people will not practice or persist long enough to improve.
This is good news if you are willing to do what most people will not. It is the reason you are more likely to expand your client base and succeed as the new year begins.
Highly effective lawyers master three disciplines of clarity that drive meaningful business development.
Discipline 1: Take time to reflect.
Take time to think, muse, and reflect on your client relationships, recent wins and losses, and potential opportunities. Sift through the clutter, run ideas up the proverbial flagpole, and then draw conclusions that give you clarity on where to focus your efforts.
The start of a new year is the ideal moment to step back, assess what worked, and decide what deserves your attention going forward.
Discipline 2: Select your heroes with great care.
Effective lawyers carefully select their heroes, clients, colleagues, and mentors whose work and results they choose to recognize and celebrate.
These are the relationships you invest in and strengthen, setting the tone for the year ahead and reinforcing the connections that support long-term growth.
Discipline 3: Practice.
The best lawyers practice the conversations, stories, and presentations that help prospects and clients see the value they bring. Having refined their message, they seek new opportunities, larger audiences, and repeat interactions to grow their business.
Practicing with intention early in the year builds confidence and momentum that compounds over time.
Effective lawyers do not have to be passionate, charming, brilliant, or great speakers. What they must be is clear.
Our need for clarity, when met, engenders confidence, persistence, resilience, and creativity.
Show clients and prospects clearly whom you serve, where your strengths lie, which results matter most, and which actions will help them succeed.
They will reward you by deepening their loyalty and referring new opportunities throughout the year.
Takeaway:
Reach out early in the year to a key client or prospect. Reconnect, reflect on their needs, and start a conversation about how you can help them succeed in the months ahead.
Small, intentional actions now will pay dividends throughout 2026.
Wishing you a successful new year filled with clarity, growth, and client wins.
