How to turn mistakes into lessons and lead with confidence.
Time to read: 1.5 minutes
Over the years, I’ve coached leaders who describe themselves as perfectionists, always striving for perfection. My advice: instead of chasing perfection, aim for excellence. It’s attainable with hard work, but expect to make mistakes along the way. Leadership demands top performance, but you also must allow yourself the luxury of error from time to time. To navigate these career bumps, you need strong emotional resilience to adjust and correct your course.
Fear of making a mistake can undermine even the most talented leader. It stifles creativity, discourages risk-taking, increases stress, and creates tension across your team.
Think about it: how many inventions or innovations would never exist if their creators had feared failure? Anyone who’s done something truly great failed first. Failure is part of trying. What matters is how you respond. Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Edison, and Michael Jordan all failed, and they show that failure can be a powerful teacher on the road to success.
Worrying about mistakes is counterproductive.
It drains energy and fuels a self-fulfilling prophecy.
You might fear you’ll never be good enough or dread disapproval if you’re less than perfect. This can hinder you, especially as you take on new responsibilities outside your comfort zone.
I encourage leaders to write down their fears. Acknowledge them, dissect the faulty logic, and track your reactions in a journal. Ask yourself:
Practice being unafraid. Perform at 100 percent of your capacity, accepting that mistakes will happen even despite your best efforts.
When major errors occur regularly, you may simply be in over your head.
If you struggle with chronic anxiety or perfectionism, it’s time to defuse the fear time bomb so you can thrive in the work you love.
