Twenty-five years. That's how long I've spent walking alongside leaders, helping them navigate the complexities of their roles. It's been a journey of constant learning, both for them and for me.
To mark this significant chapter (see initial announcement), I've gathered twenty-five key lessons, observations, insights, and reflections that have profoundly shaped my understanding of leadership. I'm excited to share the next four with you (see 1-4 and 5-8), with more to follow in the weeks ahead, offering a glimpse into my perspective.
9. Great leaders have imagination.
When you exercise imagination, you rely less on memory. Memory ties you to your limits and your past. Imagination points you to your potential and your future. It’s this forward-thinking mindset that allows leaders to see possibilities, inspire innovation, and create environments where people feel empowered to grow.
10. People want their leaders to be honest, forthright, and ooze integrity.
They want role models whose allegiances and priorities are beyond reproach, leaders they can trust without hesitation. The moment a leader bends the truth, they begin to lose credibility, and with it, the respect and confidence of their people. Integrity isn’t optional; it’s the foundation of lasting leadership.
11. For the next generation of leaders, soft skills are essential.
Look for effective communication, coaching ability, strong listening skills, and team-building capabilities. Seek out those who can build meaningful relationships not only within their teams but also across functions to achieve goals and get work done. The best emerging leaders show a natural curiosity, a willingness to grow, a habit of asking thoughtful questions, and a clear understanding of how their actions impact both themselves and those around them. Equally important are emotional intelligence and adaptability, the ability to navigate change, empathize with others, and remain composed under pressure.
12. Healthy teams all but eliminate politics and confusion from their cultures.
As a result, productivity rises, morale improves, and good people rarely leave. Even the smartest team will eventually fail if it’s unhealthy, but a healthy team will always find a way to succeed. Free from internal politics and unnecessary confusion, it becomes smarter over time, unlocking and leveraging the full depth of its collective intelligence and talent.
